KIDS TOUCH A TRUCK® AND LEARN ABOUT PROTECTING THE ENVIROMENT

Recently members of our San Diego team participated in local TOUCH A TRUCK® events, meeting directly with local community members and talking with them about our commitment to sustainability. We brought our Green-Star certified trucks for children to touch and sit in and learn what a real concrete truck is like up close and personal. But most importantly we were able generate conversation about what a Green-Star certification means for the community and why we have committed to environmental excellence. Having this opportunity allows us to support community events while generating trust within the community for our company.

About TOUCH A TRUCK®

The TOUCH A TRUCK® organization partners with local communities to raise funds for community-designated causes while giving kids a chance to see up close and get behind the wheel of their favorite vehicles. Local businesses have the opportunity to bring their vehicles to the site for kids to explore in exchange for an opportunity to talk with the community about what they do. At recent events in San Diego kids were able to climb on and explore over 80 of their favorite vehicles including big rigs, fire engines, police cars and construction trucks. One hundred percent of the money raised is donated to fund cancer research in children.

About Green-Star

In 2009, we obtained certification for our Mission Valley ready-mixed concrete plant, which was the first plant in Southern California and only the second in California to be certified by the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA). NRMCA's program supports the voluntary efforts of the ready mixed concrete industry to achieve environmental excellence and sustainability.

This year, NMRCA certified two more of our plants, one in Palomar and one in Santa Barbara. Each certified facility has integrated a plant-specific Environmental Management System (EMS) based on a model of continual improvement. The EMS is designed to benefit the plant's customers and community as well as its own improve its own operations. The company's goal is to certify all of its ready mixed concrete plants by the end of 2012.
