RANK ISLAND RECLAMATION WINS AWARD

Today, the State of California's Department of Conservation, Office of Mine Reclamation's (OMR) announced that Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division is the recipient of OMR's 2011 Award for Excellence in Reclamation for the reclamation of Rank Island, site of its former mining operation. Vulcan was recognized for its unique "reclamation to wildlife" project at Rank Island, which preserved ponds, wetlands and riparian areas along the San Joaquin River in Fresno County, California.

The award was presented today to Vulcan at the annual California Construction and Industrial Materials Association (CalCIMA) conference taking place in Monterey, California. The selection committee included California's State Mining and Geology Board (SMGB) and the OMR.

"Vulcan Materials is committed to responsible stewardship of the land," said Alan Wessel, president of Vulcan's Western Division. "We have built a strong reputation as a leader in environmental stewardship, and this prestigious recognition by OMR further demonstrates the success of the efforts of Vulcan and our employees to deliver socially responsible and sustainable projects."

Responsible stewardship at this particular project site has been in practice since 1988 through adherence to the principle of balanced management of natural resources. Balanced management is achieved by following the overall goals to preserve, recover, and enhance: preservation of unique natural resources (valley oak woodland and mixed riparian forest on Rank Island and along the river), the recovery of the natural resource (aggregate) that provides construction materials, and the enhancement of the land that is utilized through reclamation to wetlands and wildlife habitat.
