"MIDAS" DRAGLINE ADDS JUST THE RIGHT TOUCH

To improve our operations and reduce our overall environmental footprint at our Sanger, California facility, we decided to update and enhance many of the mining techniques we had used there for over 50 years. Several changes have been implemented, including the elimination of ground water pumping, the modification of our extraction methods for underwater mining and the addition of electrical mining tools, wherever feasible.

Of all the changes made, the introduction of "Midas," our new electric dragline, has created the most excitement. The Sanger team determined that the operation would benefit most from Midas, which would not only create a competitive advantage for our facility, but would also allow the operation to make a positive contribution to the environment. Within months of being placed into operation, Midas began to demonstrate both financial and environmental benefits. By using Midas, the facility eliminated four pieces of mobile mining equipment – a Cat 375 Excavator, two Euclid R40 Haul Trucks and one Cat 769 D Haul Truck. In 2009, this change alone saved 21,677 gallons of diesel fuel, which translates into an annual reduction of 92 metric tons (over 200,000 pounds) of greenhouse gases.

Over time, the Sanger team anticipates major additional reductions from this very large symbol of the Sanger team's commitment to the environment.
