WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "LANDS RECLAIMED?"

When our operations are complete, we prepare the land for its next best use, whether it will be wildlife habitat, wetlands, productive farmland, commercial or residential development or recreational open space. The process we use differs depending on whether the goal is (1) to restore the lands to natural habitat or wetlands or (2) to prepare the land for a secondary use, such as new homes, recreational centers or any other use.

When the Goal is to Restore to Natural Habitat:

Lands Reclaimed – means mined or disturbed lands that have been restored to native habitat through the implementation of a process of seed collection/plant propagation, weed control, grading, soil preparation and seeding/planting with appropriate native plant materials;

Lands Conserved – means those lands containing native habitat (whether enhanced, restored or undisturbed) that are (1) covered by a Conservation Easement and (2) managed and protected pursuant to a Habitat Management Plan approved by Vulcan, by a state or federal wildlife agency or by a nonprofit conservation organization;

Lands To Be Reclaimed – means the surface area of mined or disturbed lands that are required by a local, state or federally approved Reclamation Plan or similar entitlement to be enhanced and/or restored to native habitat.

When the Goal is Development

Lands Reclaimed – means mined or disturbed lands that have been restored to a condition suitable for the construction of the intended post-use through the implementation of a process of filling, grading, soil stabilization and erosion control;

Lands To Be Reclaimed – means the surface area of mined or disturbed lands that are required by a local, state or federally approved Reclamation Plan or similar entitlement to be reclaimed to a condition suitable for the construction of the post mining use.
