November 2014

The planning took months.  Throughout 2013, Vulcan's team of ready-mixed concrete specialists, along with representatives from every other participating concrete supplier met to work out the logistics for what has been called the most complicated high-rise development ever built in the United States.

And it all started at the Vulcan Materials Company’s Reliance plant in Irwindale, CA.

The Grand Pour, as it is known, was a construction project of the Turner Construction Company.  The concept of the Grand Pour was to produce the largest single-pour concrete foundation.

Its sheer size would land it in the Guinness Book of World Records.

This record-setting foundation was designed to support The Wilshire Grand, an upscale, world-class, 73-story hotel being built in downtown Los Angeles.

Its statistics are impressive.

The Grand Pour required:

21,200 cubic yards of concrete and

7.1 million pounds of reinforced steel

And all of it had to be poured within 30 hours in order for the curing to work.

To accomplish this goal, twenty-one hundred truckloads of concrete had to be choreographed in continuous loops from portable batch plants and back to the pour site.

But without the construction aggregates provided by Vulcan’s Reliance plant, none of this could have happened.

Vulcan’s Reliance and Sun Valley plants provided 100% of the aggregates used in this project.  The Reliance plant’s proximity to the portable batch plants and the downtown area made it a perfect fit for the unforgiving time schedule that was needed to make the pour work.

Before the final concrete was poured, over one thousand three hundred and forty truckloads of rock were delivered from Vulcan's plants.

Vulcan Materials has been supplying the construction aggregates needed to build Los Angeles throughout its history.  The Grand Pour joins many other iconic projects built with our construction materials including Los Angeles City Hall, the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Hollywood Bowl and Highway 1, among many others.
