DISTANCE MATTERS

Because aggregates are low-unit-value, high-bulk-weight products, aggregate suppliers are ideally located as near as possible to the communities that require the materials to minimize costs to consumers. For example, for every 25 miles the material is transported, the cost of the material doubles. In addition, recent studies show that using community-based resources reduces environmental impacts. Based on transporting one million tons of aggregate material in 25-ton capacity trucks, 5 metric tons of CO2 are eliminated and 7,530 gallons of diesel fuel are saved for every mile saved in transport.
